Nervous Patients

Nervous Patients

We are here to help!

None of us were born to be nervous of dental treatment but many of us have become that way. In some cases it may have happened after a bad experience with a dentist. For others it may be down to anxiety, or the expectation of something awful. Others just can’t bear the needles, the noise, or even the smells.

Whatever the cause, we appreciate your anxiety and we are here to help.

In the first case we listen to what you have to say. We want to make your visits as pleasant an experience as possible and it is important that we appreciate your needs and expectations. We will help you to understand what treatment options are available and how best to proceed. This may be simply to allow extra time for your visits, or perhaps listen to music during the procedure. We use topical anaesthetic gel to make the injections easier, our anaesthetic is preheated to body temperature for comfort and the finest needles are used. For patients who are especially nervous we provide treatment under intravenous sedation.

If you are a nervous patient please tell us and we will treat you very gently indeed ....

Intravenous Sedation is the best technique for the complete control of anxiety in dentistry. A sedative drug called Midazolam is used to induce a hypnotic, semi-conscious state and is the method of choice for the treatment of very nervous patients. IV sedation is not a general anaesthetic, but is a safe, more controlled alternative.

Will I be asleep? You will be deeply relaxed throughout the procedure and lose all sense of what’s going on and the time involved. You may even fall asleep but that is not the purpose of sedation.  Partial or complete memory loss is another effect of sedation so that in any event it will appear that you were indeed asleep during the procedure.

Is it necessary to be numbed up for the procedure? Although you will be completely relaxed/asleep the complete relief of pain can only be achieved using local anaesthetic, but you will not be aware of it and will not remember it being given.

Is the drug and procedure safe?  IV sedation is EXTREMELY safe when carried out by a specially trained dentist. Sedation is even safer than local anaesthetic on its own! However contraindications including pregnancy, CNS depression, impaired lung , kidney or liver function would rule out sedation as an option.

How will I be afterwards? / Can I drive home? You will be very happy when the sedation procedure is finished. However you will be drowsy and still under the influence of the drug. You will need an escort to bring you home. You are completely unfit to drive and should not attempt to do so. The rest of the day should be relaxed with no exertion while you recover. Alcohol should be avoided.  The next day you will be fine!

How much does Intravenous Sedation Cost?  The cost per sedation visit is €180. This is payable at the time of booking the appointment.
